How we compared

Compared on published specs and prices. This article compares the official plans, limits, context windows and privacy settings published by OpenAI and Google, checked on October 31, 2026. We did not run a scored benchmark of answer quality for this comparison, because results change with every model update and depend heavily on the prompt. For hands-on coding comparisons, see ChatGPT vs Claude for coding.

OpenAI’s pricing page shows ChatGPT Go and Pro, but their prices were not printed as text when we checked, so we have left them out rather than guess. Google’s plans are monthly, can be cancelled at any time and do not give partial refunds. Google AI plans are for ages 18 and up.

At the main tier, the cost difference is one cent: $20 for ChatGPT Plus vs $19.99 for Google AI Pro. The real difference is what comes bundled. Google AI Pro includes 5 TB of Google storage, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 1,000 monthly AI credits for Google’s Flow video tool and YouTube Premium Lite. If you already pay for Google storage, that bundle can make Gemini the cheaper choice overall.

Usage limits

Both services cap how much you can use the best models, and both describe limits as multiples rather than fixed message counts.

  • Gemini: AI Plus gives about 2x the free limits, AI Pro about 4x, and Ultra 5x or 20x the Pro limits. Google says limits refresh every 5 hours, up to a weekly cap.
  • ChatGPT: Free has unlimited everyday text chats but limited uploads, image generation, deep research and Codex. Go and Plus raise those limits, and Pro offers three usage tiers with OpenAI’s top reasoning model.

Neither company guarantees a specific number of messages, so if you are a heavy user, expect to hit limits occasionally on either one at the $20 tier.

Context window and file uploads

The context window is how much text the model can consider at once, measured in tokens (roughly three-quarters of a word each).

Plan Context window
ChatGPT Free (Instant) 27K tokens
ChatGPT Go and Plus 54K (Instant), 256K (reasoning)
ChatGPT Pro 128K (Instant), 400K (reasoning)
Google AI Pro 1M tokens, uploads up to 1,500 pages or 30,000 lines of code

OpenAI and Google help and plan pages, checked October 31, 2026.

For very long documents, such as a full contract set, a book or a large codebase, Gemini’s 1 million token window on AI Pro is a clear advantage. For everyday questions and short documents, both are more than enough.

Features and integrations

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is built around the chat app itself: projects to organize work, custom GPTs, image generation, deep research, voice and Codex for coding tasks. Higher plans add agent features and, on Pro, monthly API credits. It works the same way whatever email or office suite you use.

Gemini

Gemini’s strength is Google’s ecosystem. The free plan already includes Deep Research, Gemini Live (voice), Canvas and Gems (custom assistants). AI Pro adds Gemini directly inside Gmail and Docs, so you can draft, summarize and search without copying text into a separate chat. If your work already runs on Google Workspace, that saves time every day.

Privacy and data controls

ChatGPT (personal plans) Gemini (personal accounts)
Used to improve models On by default (“Improve the model for everyone”); you can turn it off Depends on Activity settings; a subset of chats is reviewed by people
Temporary or unsaved chats Temporary chats are not used for training and are kept up to 30 days With Keep Activity off or temporary chats, chats are still kept up to 72 hours, not used for training
Retention Saved chats stay in your history until you delete them Auto-delete defaults to 18 months (3, 36 months or never also available); human-reviewed chats kept up to 3 years
Business plans Business, Enterprise and API data not used for training by default Workspace accounts follow separate terms

OpenAI and Google privacy help pages, checked October 31, 2026.

If privacy matters most, turn off model training in ChatGPT’s data controls, or turn off Keep Activity in Gemini, and avoid pasting confidential information into either consumer app. For sensitive work, use a business plan or the API, which have stricter default terms. Our ChatGPT vs DeepSeek comparison covers a third option with different data-location rules.
