Both start at $20 a month, but OpenAI’s help center says ChatGPT Plus is billed monthly only, with no annual plan. Anthropic offers Claude Pro at $17 a month billed annually, which is $200 paid up front. Over a year, that is $240 for ChatGPT Plus vs $200 for Claude Pro on annual billing, a saving of $40 if you are sure you will use it all year.

If you are not sure, start monthly on either. Both let you cancel, and you keep access until the end of the paid period.

Usage limits

Neither plan is unlimited, and neither publishes a fixed number of messages.

  • ChatGPT Plus raises the Free limits on messages, file uploads, image generation, deep research and Codex. The free plan already includes unlimited everyday text chats, so Plus mainly buys you more of the advanced features.
  • Claude Pro gives more usage than Free, counted in a rolling 5-hour window and a weekly limit. Long conversations and large files use up the allowance faster, because Claude re-reads the context on every message.

If you hit limits often, the upgrade path is clearer on Claude: Max at $100 a month gives 5x Pro usage plus $100 a month in API credits, and Ultra at $200 removes the 5-hour limit, gives 10x Pro weekly usage and includes $200 in API credits. ChatGPT’s next step is Pro, whose price was not printed as text on the pricing page when we checked.

Context window and long documents

The context window decides how much text the model can work with at once. ChatGPT Plus offers 54K tokens on its Instant model and 256K on reasoning models. Claude’s pricing page lists context of up to 1 million tokens, depending on the model. In practical terms, that makes Claude Pro the safer choice for very long contracts, research papers, books or large codebases, while both are fine for everyday questions and normal-length documents.

Features beyond chat

What ChatGPT Plus adds

  • Image generation and editing inside the chat.
  • Voice conversations in the mobile and desktop apps.
  • Custom GPTs and projects to organize work and reuse instructions.
  • Deep research for longer, sourced reports.
  • Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent.

What Claude Pro adds

  • Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent for the terminal and IDEs. Compare it with an AI editor in Cursor vs Claude Code.
  • Projects to keep files and instructions together.
  • Research for multi-step, sourced answers.
  • More models, including access to Claude Opus.
  • Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, to use Claude inside your browser and Office apps.

If two or more rows matter to you and point in different directions, the free plans make it easy to test: ChatGPT Free has unlimited everyday text chats and Claude Free covers basic chat, so you can try the same task on both before paying.

Privacy settings

On both services, personal plans can use your chats to improve future models unless you change the setting. ChatGPT’s “Improve the model for everyone” control is on by default for Free, Plus and Pro personal workspaces and can be turned off; temporary chats are not used for training and are kept for up to 30 days. Anthropic’s pricing page lists model training as opt-out on its consumer plans, which means you can switch it off in Claude’s privacy settings. Both companies say their business plans and APIs are not used for training by default.

If you handle client or company data, check your employer’s policy first and consider a business plan or the API. For costs on the API side, see AI API pricing compared and the AI API cost calculator.
